Transforming Westlake: Centro Westlake’s High-Rise Development Plan
March 1, 2025
According to an article published by Urbanize LA on June 12, 2023, a significant mixed-use development, Centro Westlake, is planned above the Westlake/MacArthur Park Station in Los Angeles, led by Metro and the Walter J. Company. The project, designed by SOM and Studio MLA, includes multiple high-rise and low-rise structures featuring 668 studio, one, and two bedroom dwellings, with 234 units designated as income-restricted. The development will also incorporate a hotel, over 56,000 square feet of retail space (20% reserved for local Westlake residents), approximately 115,000 square feet of office space, a food court, and a dog park. A 44-story, 570-foot-tall building will anchor the site near Wilshire Boulevard, with a 34-story, 448-foot-tall building near 7th Street, and smaller structures ranging from two to six stories. The design prioritizes community access by reserving space for local street vendors and 10% of commercial space for minority-owned businesses. The project aims to enhance the area’s connectivity to MacArthur Park through terraced designs and is pending approval from the L.A. City Planning Department, with potential construction starting by winter 2024 if approved by Metro and city officials.
