Enhancing MacArthur Lake: 2025 Stormwater Capture Plan
January 1, 2025
According to an article published by the MacArthur Park Neighborhood Council on October 14, 2024, the MacArthur Lake Stormwater Capture Project is set to commence in 2025, as announced by LA Sanitation officials during a recent water tour of Echo Park. The project aims to enhance stormwater management by draining MacArthur Lake, replacing its bottom surface, and improving the collection and processing of stormwater flowing into and out of the lake. Key features include a new water feature near the southwest corner of the park, equipment upgrades within or near the existing pump house, and underground infrastructure such as diversion, capture, and pretreatment structures along Lake Street, as well as a stormwater treatment unit along the park’s southern edge. Pipelines will also be installed in the park and surrounding streets.
The initiative will divert and treat both wet and dry weather flows from the existing storm drain system, storing treated water in the lake to reduce reliance on potable water and discharging excess to the sanitary sewer system. This is expected to reduce pollutant loads entering Ballona Creek and Santa Monica Bay, improving water quality and environmental health. Additionally, the project will enhance recreational and educational opportunities through features like signage and information boards about stormwater management. The project, funded by a $20-million allocation from the County’s Measure W, is a joint effort between LA Sanitation & Environment and the Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks.
